VACANCY ADVERTISEMENT – Communications Officer

The African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN) is a regional network of the Catholic Church congregation that supports and coordinates the efforts of Jesuits on HIV prevention and AIDS care across the sub-Saharan region of Africa and Madagascar. The Network was established in June 2002 by the Jesuit Major Superiors of Africa and Madagascar (JESAM), to coordinate the existing initiatives by the Jesuits working in the AIDS Ministries and to create new projects. AJAN was conceived as a corporate response of the Jesuits in Africa and Madagascar towards the scourge of HIV & AIDS. This response is aimed at developing appropriate ministries that are deeply rooted among those who suffer and accompanying those who care for them. The network seeks to prevent HIV and AIDS, care for those living with HIV and mitigate its negative impact among the population. AJAN aims at creating an environment favorable for living life full of hope as expressed in the mission.

AJAN is seeking to recruit a highly competent, results oriented and enthusiastic individual to fill the position of Communication Officer. The Communication Officer reports to the Director.

Position: AJAN Communications Officer.
Job Location: Nairobi
Salary: Negotiable upon meeting required qualifications
Purpose of Position: To coordinate and oversee AJAN's communication needs, strategy and implementation as well as to support and maintain AJAN’s internal and external communications and documentations both at the headquarters and from the fields.

Responsibilities and tasks
Design and implement an annual communication plan/strategy for AJAN that covers all print, soft and online media.
Draw up an annual budget for AJAN communications as per the annual plan/strategy
Liaise with field project managements for data and information sharing
Source content for, edit and publish AJAN interim reports as requested by the management
Source content for, design, edit and Publish AJAN annual report
Source content for, write, edit and publish AJAN news
Source content for and publish AJAN Lenten reflections
Source content for, edit and publish public statement and messages for important celebrations like World AIDS Day, Women's day, AIDS orphans' day, Youth day, etc.
Source content for and publish articles for JESAM News and other publications
Coordinate, supervise and ensure content of the AJAN website and AHAPPY application are regularly updated and managed
Manage, update and maintain AJAN social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
Monitor AJAN web statistics and provide regular follow up for maximizing its audience
Ensure high quality visual content for communications with professional photos and videos editing
Design and edit AJAN key messages for IEC materials, publications, box images, leaflets, brochures, tracts, etc., and ensure they are printed and produced to a high standard within budget and delivered on time for the sake of appropriate target audience
Supervise and manage translation of the above articles and IEC materials including print, soft and online media
Supervise, manage and update AJAN physical and online Library and AJAN Resource Center (ARC)
Connect and update link between AJAN website and fields project websites to improve communication flows between the members of the network
Oversee capacity building of AJAN House staff, project directors and other core staff on communications
Evaluate and report on AJAN communication plan/strategy for effectiveness
Take an active role and involvement in activities of trainings of youth with AJAN programs
Any other communication and media services as requested by the AJAN management

Required Qualifications and Experience
At least Bachelor’s degree in Communication, journalism or equivalent
Commitment and enthusiasm to serve AJAN shown from proven successful previous experience with faith-based or non-profit organization
Broad knowledge about AJAN, belief in its values
Desire to participate in meaningful work that serves the marginalized and promotes human dignity and social justice
Problem solving, open minded and openness to learn and expand his/her field of knowledge according to AJAN communication needs and interact in multicultural setting.
Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal and presentation skills with fluency in both English and French
Strong technical computer skills in editing, proofreading, social media and online communication including the use of Content Management Systems (CMS)
Excellent design eye. Knowledge and proven experience of advanced design programs including Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Quark Express, Corel Draw, etc.
Knowledge and experience/understanding of Spreadsheet, PowerPoint, word processing and multimedia softwares
Ability to be creative thinking, resourceful and innovative in relation to communication
Organizational skills and attention to details
Ability to write for various audiences including general public audience, media and financial partners; to convey information and ideas through a variety of media to the members in manner that engage them and to better participate in AJAN's work
Ability to train and interact with youth
Awareness of environmentally sustainable print production
Knowledge of Data Protection Act and Copyright
At least three (3) years of experience preferred, working with multimedia software and design programs
Aggressive and result oriented.
Possession of a valid driving license is an added advantage
