Father Chikere Ugwanyi, SJ, the current Principal of Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja, has been appointed as the new coordinator of the Jesuit Africa Social and Basic Education and Mission (JASBEAM). He is set to assume office in August 2025.

The appointment made by Superior General of the Society of Jesus Fr. Arturo Sosa, announced by Fr. José Minaku, SJ, President of the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) has been met with widespread approval, given Fr. Ugwanyi's extensive experience and commitment to education and leadership.

Fr. Ugwanyi brings a rich and diverse background to his new role. Born and raised in various parts of Nigeria, he has firsthand experience of the nation's cultural diversity. His journey with the Society of Jesus began in 2000, after earning a diploma in computer studies and gaining work experience in publishing and business. Over the years, his academic and professional journey has taken him across Africa, Europe, and the United States.

His academic credentials include: A master’s degree in philosophy from the United Kingdom, studies in theology at Hekima University College, Kenya, advanced theology training at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, USA, and education studies at the University of San Francisco.

Fr. Ugwanyi has a strong track record in leadership, including roles as Deputy Administrator and Administrator of St. Francis Catholic Secondary School in Lagos, and Socius (Executive Secretary) to the Provincial of the North-West Africa Province of the Society of Jesus. Since 2019, he has served as Principal of Loyola Jesuit College, where he has been instrumental in fostering academic excellence and holistic student development.

The JCAM president, Fr. Minaku, lauded JASBEAM's outgoing coordinator, Fr. Joe Arimoso, for his steadfast leadership and contributions, aligning JASBEAM with the aspirations of the Society of Jesus' General Congregations and fostering connections with global initiatives like Educate Magis.

Fr. Ugwanyi is known for his passion for transformative education, which he describes as a “long-haul transformative experience for the individual and a village affair.” Fluent in multiple languages, he enjoys reading, music, and cultural exchange.

Fr. Minaku has called on the Jesuit community, their Collaborators, and all members of JASBEAM to extend their full support to Fr. Ugwanyi as he prepares to take on this new role. His leadership promises to build on the foundation of his predecessors, guiding JASBEAM toward greater impact in education and social transformation.
