On December 12th, 2024, a groundbreaking event unfolded within the Society of Jesus: for the first time in history, a Jesuit from the Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar assumed the role of rector in a Roman house.

Fr. Fulgence Ratsimbazafy, SJ, a Jesuit from Madagascar, began his term as the rector of Collegio San Roberto Bellarmino, an esteemed international Jesuit community.

Fr. Fulgence brings an impressive portfolio of leadership and formation experience to his new role. He previously served as the rector of St. Paul Tsaramasoandro Philosophate in Antananarivo and as the provincial of the Madagascar province. His leadership style, rooted in deep faith and commitment, has prepared him for this significant mission.

The installation ceremony, held during a Mass presided over by Fr. General Arturo Sosa, marked the transition from outgoing rector Fr. João Renato to Fr. Fulgence. In his address, Fr. General expressed profound gratitude to both leaders for their dedication to the universal mission of the Society of Jesus.

Fr. Johan Verschueren, the delegate for the Roman houses, read the official acts of installation and reminded Fr. Fulgence of the unique character of his new community. Collegio San Roberto Bellarmino hosts Jesuits from over 27 nationalities, and some years, this number exceeds 30. This vibrant diversity underscores the global nature of the Jesuit mission and the profound significance of Fr. Fulgence’s appointment.

In his inaugural speech titled “Gratitude and Vision – Together,” Fr. Fulgence reflected on St. Ignatius of Loyola’s vision at La Storta, expressing hope that the Lord’s favor would guide his mission in Rome. He extended heartfelt thanks to Fr. General and the delegate for trusting him with this leadership role and assured the community members, both present and past, of his unwavering support.

Fr. Fulgence outlined a four-point vision for the community:

1. Creating a Sense of Home: Ensuring that all members feel at home as they are missioned to Rome for work and studies.

2. Embracing Diversity: Harnessing the richness of cultural and geographical diversity for mutual enrichment.

3. Fostering Freedom for Growth: Encouraging intellectual, social, religious, and spiritual development.

4. Developing Leadership for Service: Cultivating wise and inspiring leadership for the Church and the world.

He also called on the community to draw inspiration from their patron, St. Robert Bellarmine, whose life exemplified profound concern for others, incomparable patience, and exceptional academic talent during a turbulent period in Church history.

The transition was celebrated during a vibrant Mass of Our Lady of Guadalupe, symbolizing hope and unity. Following the ceremony, the community warmly welcomed Fr. Fulgence with a delightful Mexican feast prepared by Mexican sisters, further emphasizing the rich international spirit of the Bellarmino community.

Fr. Fulgence’s appointment is a historic milestone, highlighting the growing global interconnectedness of the Society of Jesus. As the first African rector of Collegio San Roberto Bellarmino, he embodies the Jesuits’ commitment to diversity and the universal mission of the Church.
