As we embark on a new year, it brings with it a spirit of renewal and opportunity.
It is with immense gratitude that through a memo, the JCAM president, Fr. José Minaku, SJ, announced the appointment of Fr. Rampeoane Hlobo as the new Director of the Justice and Ecology Office/Justice and Ecology Network of Africa (JEO/JENA). This transition marks a significant moment in our commitment to fostering justice and ecological awareness across the African continent.
Fr. Rampeoane's willingness to take on this important role is commendable, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to him. His leadership is poised to guide JEO/JENA toward further achievements in addressing social justice issues and ecological challenges facing our communities. As he assumes this vital position, our prayers and support will accompany him, ensuring that he has the strength and wisdom to navigate the responsibilities ahead.
We would be remiss if we did not take this moment to acknowledge the exemplary service of Fr. Charles Chilufya, SJ, who has led JENA with dedication and integrity. His stewardship during particularly challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, showcased his resilience and commitment to our mission. Fr. Chilufya's contributions have left an indelible mark on social apostolates within our Conference and the Society of Jesus, and his legacy will continue to inspire us as we move forward.
The transition to Fr. Rampeoane's leadership will be carefully managed, with Fr. Chilufya graciously agreeing to remain available to facilitate a smooth handover. This collaborative approach will not only allow Fr. Rampe (as he likes to be referred to as) the necessary time to conclude his ongoing responsibilities but will also ensure that he is fully prepared to embrace his new role, as discussed during the recent Kigali Plenary Session.
As we embark on this new chapter, let us renew our commitment to our shared mission, striving to serve others and promote justice and ecology in the spirit of "ad majorem Dei gloriam" (for the greater glory of God). Together, with our collective care and commitment, we will continue to make meaningful strides in our work.
May this appointment herald a new era of hope and active engagement in the pressing issues that confront us. Congratulations to Fr. Rampe on this significant appointment, and thank you to Fr. Chilufya for his steadfast service. As we move forward, let us do so together, united in purpose and spirit.

If you wish to make a donation by direct bank transfer please contact Fr Paul Hamill SJ treasurer@jesuits.africa. Fr Paul will get in touch with you about the best method of transfer for you and share account details with you. Donations can be one-off gifts or of any frequency; for example, you might wish to become a regular monthly donor of small amounts; that sort of reliable income can allow for very welcome forward planning in the development of the Society’s works in Africa and Madagascar.
Often it is easier to send a donation to an office within your own country and Fr Paul can advise on how that might be done. In some countries this kind of giving can also be recognised for tax relief and the necessary receipts will be issued.
