The 64th plenary session of the meeting of the Major Superiors of the Society of Jesus in Africa and Madagascar took place in Cape Coast Ghana from the 13th to the 24th of October 2021.
It began with a joint 8-day retreat animated by Fr. Gilbert Banda, SJ of the Jesuit Southern Africa Province. During this retreat, all Major Superiors had an opportunity do a manifestation of conscience with Fr. General, Fr. Arturo Sosa.
Spiritual moments of each day included points for prayer that were given at 10 am, mass at noon, spiritual conversations at 4:30 pm and adoration of the blessed sacrament at 7 pm.
The event was significant not only for the fact that it was a worthy moment for spiritual upliftment, but because it was the first time in two years that Major Superiors were meeting in person. Since the onset of the global Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020 with the accompanying lockdown measures taken across the board, all meetings had been confined to the online model. During this time too, several provinces and region had changed Major Superiors, so this moment of prayer also presented an important opportunity to know each other and create working relationships.
The visit to the Elmina Castle, the oldest castle along the West-African coast and a holding fort for slaves in the Southeast coast of Ghana provided a composition of place for the ad amorem meditation and a stark reminder of the socio-political challenges facing the continent of Africa. The next plenary will hold from April 27th to May 2nd 2022 in Lusaka Zambia.

If you wish to make a donation by direct bank transfer please contact Fr Paul Hamill SJ treasurer@jesuits.africa. Fr Paul will get in touch with you about the best method of transfer for you and share account details with you. Donations can be one-off gifts or of any frequency; for example, you might wish to become a regular monthly donor of small amounts; that sort of reliable income can allow for very welcome forward planning in the development of the Society’s works in Africa and Madagascar.
Often it is easier to send a donation to an office within your own country and Fr Paul can advise on how that might be done. In some countries this kind of giving can also be recognised for tax relief and the necessary receipts will be issued.
