The Marist Brothers of Africa have reaffirmed their commitment to synodality and missionary life, following a three-day gathering held from October 15 to 17 at the Marist Formation Centre in Orlu, Nigeria.
This workshop, organized in collaboration with the African Synodality Initiative (ASI), centered on the theme “Strengthening Synodality: A Pathway for Deeper Communion and Mission among Marist Brothers.”
Facilitated by Dr. David Kaulemu, Ms. Ndanu Mung’ala, and programme coordinator Ms. Caroline Kavita of the African Synodality Initiative (ASI) - a Jesuit Conference of Africa and Madagascar (JCAM) programme, the workshop explored synodality — as model of collective decision-making and discernment within the Church — as a guiding principle for the Brothers’ mission. The gathering provided an opportunity for deep reflection on unity, collaboration, and inclusivity in their communal life and outreach.
The Marist Brothers emphasized the significance of active listening to the Holy Spirit and the voices of those they serve, including students, teachers, and lay partners. They discussed themes of humility, simplicity, and servant leadership, embracing a spirit of “self-emptying” to maintain strong relationships within their community and with the wider Church. Communal prayer and brotherly encounters were highlighted as vital practices to strengthen their mission.
A core focus was the Brothers' commitment to inclusive ministry, particularly their work with marginalized youth. They discussed the importance of advocating for these young people and ensuring that inclusivity remains at the forefront of Marist ministries. The Brothers pledged to integrate synodal principles into their formation programs, promoting open dialogue and decision-making that reflect the Marist values of modesty, simplicity, and family spirit.
The gathering also identified strategic areas for action moving forward, including addressing social justice issues, fostering open communication, and engaging in digital evangelization to reach younger generations. The Brothers expressed a collective determination to apply synodality in daily life, reinforcing teamwork and inclusivity in every aspect of their work.
In a closing statement, the Marist Brothers affirmed, “We, the Marist Brothers, commit to fostering open communication, collaboration, and inclusivity in all aspects of our work. Synodality is not just a concept but a way of life that we will integrate into our mission.” They underscored that by embodying humility, simplicity, and servant leadership, they aim to strengthen the Marist mission in response to the evolving needs of today’s world.
